How Bluetooth Works on the Gateway
All HPzenAi gateways include Bluetooth 5.0 Low Energy (BLE). BLE serves two distinct purposes: first, as a peripheral for initial app pairing and local configuration — this is how the app delivers Wi-Fi credentials to the gateway without requiring you to join the gateway hotspot; second, as a central scanner for discovering and communicating with nearby HPzenAi BLE-enabled field devices. BLE operates independently of the internet connection, so the gateway can be configured locally even before it is online.
Prerequisites
Ensure these conditions are met before starting any Bluetooth pairing or configuration.
- 1Gateway powered on — the LED should flash blue slowly when in BLE setup mode.
- 2Bluetooth enabled on your iOS or Android smartphone.
- 3HPzenAi app installed and logged in.
- 4Smartphone within 5 metres of the gateway for reliable BLE pairing.
Pairing the Gateway with the App over BLE
The initial gateway registration uses Bluetooth to establish a secure local channel for Wi-Fi credential delivery. This is typically a one-time step during installation.

BLE Field Device Scanning
The gateway continuously scans for nearby HPzenAi BLE field devices within range. Detected BLE devices appear as 'Discovered' in the app and can be added to your monitoring network without RS485 cable wiring — useful for temporary monitoring setups, proof-of-concept installations, or devices located outside the RS485 cable run.
- 1BLE field devices are detected automatically within 60 seconds of power-on.
- 2Indoor BLE range is typically up to 20 m through standard building materials.
- 3Outdoor line-of-sight BLE range is up to 50 m.
- 4Multiple BLE field devices can be connected simultaneously to a single gateway.
- 5BLE devices appear in the app alongside RS485 devices — there is no separate section.
Using BLE for Local Configuration (Offline)
When the gateway is offline — during initial installation or in areas with no internet — the HPzenAi app can still connect to the gateway over BLE to perform local configuration. This includes setting Wi-Fi credentials, changing the device name, reading diagnostic logs, and checking firmware version. Local BLE configuration does not require an internet connection on either the gateway or the phone.

Bluetooth Troubleshooting
If the app cannot find the gateway during BLE pairing, work through these checks.
- 1Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone and the app has Bluetooth permission.
- 2Position your phone within 2 metres of the gateway — move closer if the gateway is inside a metal enclosure.
- 3Check that the gateway LED is flashing blue slowly, indicating BLE pairing mode. If solid green, the gateway is already online — hold RESET for 3 seconds to re-enter setup mode.
- 4Close and reopen the HPzenAi app, then retry Add Gateway.
- 5Restart your phone's Bluetooth (toggle off and on) if the gateway does not appear in the scan list after 30 seconds.
