How Device Pairing Works
Once the gateway is online, it continuously scans the RS485 bus for connected field devices — water meters, level sensors, relay controllers, and motor starters. Discovered devices appear in the HPzenAi app where you can name them, set alert thresholds, and begin monitoring. RS485 devices are identified by their unique Modbus address (1–32). Each device must have a unique address on the bus before pairing.
Prerequisites
Complete these steps before attempting to pair field devices.
- 1Gateway powered on and connected to the internet (Wi-Fi or SIM).
- 2Gateway registered in the HPzenAi app and showing Online status.
- 3Field devices physically installed and RS485 wired to the gateway terminal block.
- 412V DC power applied to all field devices.
- 5Each field device configured with a unique RS485 Modbus address (1–32).
Auto-Discovery (Recommended)
The gateway automatically scans the RS485 bus when powered on and re-scans periodically. Newly connected devices with valid Modbus addresses are detected within 60 seconds and appear under Gateway → Discovered Devices in the app. Tap any discovered device to assign a name and complete the linking process.

Manual RS485 Scan
If a device does not appear under Discovered Devices within 2 minutes, trigger a manual scan from the app.

Manual Device Addition
Use manual addition when you know the device type and Modbus address but auto-discovery does not find it — for example, on long cable runs or when a non-standard baud rate is used.
- 1Go to Gateway → Add Device in the app.
- 2Select the device type: water meter, level sensor, relay controller, or motor starter.
- 3Enter the RS485 Modbus bus address assigned to the device (1–32).
- 4Select the gateway the device is wired to.
- 5Tap Verify — the app queries the device and confirms the connection.
- 6Assign a descriptive name and tap Save to complete the linking.
Linking Devices via QR Code
HPzenAi devices ship with a QR code on the label that encodes the device type and factory Modbus address. Scanning the QR code during pairing pre-fills the device type and address automatically, reducing manual entry errors.

Device Naming and Grouping
Assign descriptive names to devices immediately after linking so they are easily identified on the dashboard. Use names that reflect physical location or function — for example, 'Overhead Tank Level', 'Borewell Sensor', or 'Block A Water Meter'. Group related devices by location or function using the Groups feature under Devices → Manage Groups to keep large installations organised.
Verifying a Paired Device
After pairing, confirm the device is delivering live data before completing the installation.
- 1Open the device tile in the HPzenAi app and confirm the status shows 'Connected'.
- 2Verify live readings are displayed and updating periodically.
- 3For water meters, confirm the reading matches the current mechanical register value.
- 4For level sensors, confirm the reported level is consistent with the known tank level.
- 5Set alert thresholds under the device tile to enable notifications for high or low readings.
