Installation & Setup Guide

How to mount and wire the SP-1P complete single-phase smart motor starter into a new or existing motor control panel.

Section: Starter 1-Phase

Safety Requirements

The SP-1P handles live 220V AC on its input terminals. All mains wiring must be performed with the supply isolated and locked off. The SP-1P is a complete motor starter — no existing contactor or overload relay wiring is reused.

Steps

  • Switch off and lock out the mains circuit breaker that will supply the SP-1P before making any wiring connections.
  • Prove 0V AC at L and N terminals of the incoming supply using a multimeter before connecting wires.
  • The SP-1P mains wiring (L, N input and U, N-out to motor) must be performed by a qualified electrician.
  • 12V DC and RS485 wiring to the built-in MX-1P module may be handled by a competent technician after the mains is isolated.
  • Ensure the supply MCB or fuse rating matches the contactor rating — SP-1P-9 needs a maximum 16A MCB; SP-1P-18 needs a maximum 25A MCB.

Removing an Old Starter

When upgrading from an older single-phase starter, the SP-1P replaces the full starter assembly. Remove the old starter power and control hardware rather than wiring the SP-1P in parallel with legacy equipment.

Steps

  • Disconnect and remove the previous contactor, overload relay, timer unit, and manual starter controls from the panel before fitting the SP-1P.
  • Reuse the incoming mains cable and outgoing motor cable only if conductor size, insulation condition, and terminal lugs remain suitable.
  • Do not leave the old starter output connected in parallel with the SP-1P output terminals.
  • If the old panel contains additional float switches or pressure switches, rewire them only if they are still required as dry contacts in the new control scheme.
  • After replacement, relabel the enclosure and circuit identification so the installation clearly shows the panel is now controlled by the SP-1P smart starter.

Assembly Mounting

The SP-1P mounts on a 35 mm DIN rail inside a distribution enclosure. Ensure the enclosure has adequate ventilation for the motor starter heat output.

Steps

  • With the mains supply isolated, mount the SP-1P assembly on the DIN rail — press the clip until it snaps into place.
  • The contactor requires adequate air circulation — leave at least 25 mm clearance on each side of the assembly.
  • Mount the 12V DC DIN rail power supply adjacent to the SP-1P assembly.
  • Route incoming mains cables (L, N from MCB) and motor output cables (to motor terminal box) in separate cable ducts, away from the RS485 and 12V DC wiring.
  • Ensure the DIN rail is securely fixed to the enclosure back plate — the SP-1P is heavier than a standard module.

Mains & Motor Wiring

The SP-1P has clearly labelled input terminals (L, N) and output terminals (U, N-OUT). The motor connects directly to the output terminals — no additional contactor or overload relay is required.

Steps

  • Connect the 2.5 mm² Line (L) wire from the supply MCB to SP-1P terminal L.
  • Connect the 2.5 mm² Neutral (N) wire from the supply MCB to SP-1P terminal N.
  • Connect the 2.5 mm² motor main winding wire to SP-1P terminal U.
  • Connect the motor Neutral (common) wire to SP-1P terminal N-OUT.
  • For capacitor-type motors (CSIR/PSC), the capacitor and auxiliary winding remain wired directly inside the motor terminal box — the SP-1P only switches the main contactor. The capacitor is not connected to the SP-1P.
  • Set the overload relay FLA dial on the SP-1P to the motor nameplate current (FLA or rated current). The dial is accessible on the front of the assembly — do not set it to the MCB rating.
  • Connect 12V DC V+ and V− to the built-in MX-1P module's control power terminals.
  • Connect RS485 shielded cable: A core → MX-1P RS485-A, B core → RS485-B. Shield to earth at enclosure earth bar.

Commissioning & First Start

Steps

  • Close and latch the enclosure. Restore 12V DC power first — confirm the MX-1P LED on the SP-1P assembly illuminates (green or flashing blue).
  • Restore mains supply (close the MCB).
  • Complete Gateway Linking before issuing the first start command — see the Gateway Linking guide.
  • From the app, tap the motor controller tile → Manual Control → Start. The SP-1P contactor energises with an audible click.
  • Measure motor running current with a clamp meter on the Line conductor — confirm it is within ±10% of the motor nameplate current.
  • If the motor hums but does not rotate: check the capacitor inside the motor terminal box — on single-phase motors the run capacitor is in the motor, not in the SP-1P.
  • If overload relay trips immediately: re-check the FLA dial setting and confirm it matches the motor nameplate current (not the supply MCB rating).
