How Connectivity Works for Valves
HPzenAi valves do not connect to Wi-Fi directly — they are switched by the HPzenAi relay controller (XR/X series), which communicates with the HPzenAi gateway over RS485 or via its built-in Wi-Fi, SIM, or RF radio. The gateway handles the cloud connection and forwards all scheduling, manual commands, and status updates to and from the HPzenAi app. Setting up valve connectivity means setting up the relay controller's connection to the gateway and then linking the relay controller to your app account.
Step 1 — Set Up the HPzenAi Gateway Wi-Fi
- 1Power on the HPzenAi gateway and wait for the status LED to flash blue (setup mode).
- 2Open the HPzenAi app → Main Menu → Gateway → Add Gateway.
- 3Follow the in-app wizard to connect the gateway to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- 4Wait for the gateway LED to turn solid green — this confirms a successful internet connection.
- 5If the installation site has poor Wi-Fi coverage, use a GW-1 or GW-2 gateway model with a nano-SIM for cellular fallback.
Step 2 — Connect the Relay Controller to the Gateway
- 1Wire the relay controller's RS485 A terminal to the gateway's RS485 A terminal.
- 2Wire the relay controller's RS485 B terminal to the gateway's RS485 B terminal.
- 3Use a twisted-pair shielded cable for cable runs longer than 1 m.
- 4Apply 12V DC power to the relay controller using an HPzenAi power adapter.
- 5The gateway will auto-discover the relay controller within 60 seconds of power-on.
- 6Alternatively, for Wi-Fi-capable relay controller models (XR/X series), set up the controller in stand-alone Wi-Fi mode — see the relay controller Wi-Fi Setup guide for details.
Step 3 — Verify the Relay Controller in the App
- 1Open the HPzenAi app and navigate to Main Menu → Devices.
- 2The relay controller will appear as a new device tile once discovered by the gateway.
- 3Tap the relay controller tile and confirm all 8 channels are visible.
- 4Rename each channel to match the valve zone it controls (e.g., 'Zone 1 — Drip Line').
- 5Tap any channel and use Manual Control to verify the corresponding valve opens and closes correctly.
Step 4 — Test Valve Operation from the App
- 1With valves wired to the relay controller (see Wiring Guide), open the relay controller tile in the app.
- 2Tap the channel assigned to a valve.
- 3Tap Open (or ON) and confirm the valve opens — you should hear the solenoid click and water should flow.
- 4Tap Close (or OFF) and confirm the valve closes and flow stops.
- 5Repeat for each valve channel before creating any schedules.

Gateway Wi-Fi Quality Requirements
- 1Minimum Wi-Fi signal at the gateway location: −75 dBm for stable cloud sync.
- 2Use a Wi-Fi repeater or access point closer to the gateway if signal is weak.
- 3GW-1 and GW-2 gateway models include a nano-SIM slot for automatic cellular fallback.
- 4The gateway buffers relay controller commands and status updates locally for up to 24 hours if cloud connectivity is lost — schedules continue to run on the controller regardless of internet status.
