Safety Requirements
The MX-1P module wires to the control coil circuit of an existing starter — however the panel still contains live 220V AC mains wiring. All work inside the starter enclosure must be performed with the mains supply fully isolated and locked off.
- 1Switch off and lock out the mains circuit breaker feeding the motor starter before opening the enclosure.
- 2Confirm 0V AC between Line and Neutral at the starter input terminals using a multimeter before touching any wiring.
- 3The MX-1P control circuit (12V DC and RS485) can be connected by a competent technician. The coil output wiring must be handled by a qualified electrician where it passes near 220V mains terminals.
- 4Never connect the MX-1P V+ or RS485 terminals to mains voltage — the module operates on 12V DC only.
- 5Ensure all 220V mains connections remain intact from the previous installation — only the coil control wiring (A1/A2) is modified when installing the MX-1P.

Removing an Old Smart Controller
The MX-1P is intended for retrofit use. Keep the existing single-phase starter, overload relay, and motor power wiring in place, and remove only the previous smart or manual control method before installing the MX-1P control circuit.
- 1Do not remove the existing starter contactor or overload relay if they are in serviceable condition.
- 2Disconnect old timer, float-switch, or manual switch wiring only from the coil control side where the MX-1P output will take over.
- 3Retain any healthy overload trip contact in series with the contactor coil so hardware overload protection continues to operate independently of the smart controller.
- 4If the existing starter enclosure is damaged, corroded, or has loose terminals, replace the enclosure or the complete starter assembly before installing the MX-1P.
- 5If the existing panel already contains another automation controller, remove or isolate its coil output so it cannot issue conflicting start and stop commands alongside the MX-1P.
Guided Help Center
Identify any old controller, timer, or automation relay connected to the contactor coil circuit.
Panel Mounting
Mount the MX-1P module on the existing DIN rail inside the starter enclosure, or on a supplementary DIN rail section added beside the existing components.
Image
- 1With the mains supply isolated, open the existing starter enclosure.
- 2Identify a free section of DIN rail (minimum 40 mm) adjacent to the existing contactor. If no free space exists, add a short DIN rail section using adhesive DIN rail or a bolt-on extension.
- 3Clip the MX-1P module onto the DIN rail — press down on the spring clip until it snaps into place.
- 4Route 12V DC and RS485 wiring paths away from 220V mains cable routes — maintain at least 30 mm separation or use a cable duct divider.
- 5Fit the 12V DC DIN rail power supply if not already present — clip it onto the DIN rail next to the MX-1P module.
Guided Help Center
Open the enclosure and identify a free DIN rail section near the existing starter components.
Control Circuit Wiring
The MX-1P switching output connects to the existing contactor coil circuit. Only the A1 and A2 coil connections change — all mains (L, N, motor, capacitor) wiring remains untouched.
Image
- 1Identify the contactor coil terminals A1 and A2 inside the existing starter. These are the small terminals (typically 2.5 mm² screws) connected to the on/off switch, timer, or push-button circuit.
- 2Disconnect the existing control wiring from A1 (the switched side). Leave A2 connected — it typically goes to Neutral.
- 3Connect a 1.5 mm² wire from the MX-1P SWITCHING OUTPUT terminal to contactor coil A1.
- 4If the existing starter has an overload relay trip contact wired in the coil circuit, keep it in series between the MX-1P output and A1 — this preserves hardware overload protection.
- 5Connect the 12V DC power supply positive (+) output to MX-1P V+, and negative (−) to MX-1P V−.
- 6Connect RS485 cable: A core → MX-1P RS485-A terminal, B core → MX-1P RS485-B terminal. Connect cable shield to panel earth at panel end only.
- 7Verify the coil voltage selector on the MX-1P matches your contactor coil voltage (230V AC or 24V DC) before restoring power.
Guided Help Center
Locate the contactor coil terminals A1 and A2 inside the existing starter panel.
Commissioning & First Start
- 1Close and latch the enclosure. Restore 12V DC power first — confirm MX-1P LED turns green (running) or flashes blue (pairing mode if not yet linked).
- 2Restore mains supply to the starter panel.
- 3Complete Gateway Linking before issuing the first start command — see the Gateway Linking guide.
- 4Once linked, open the HPzenAi app and tap the motor controller tile. Tap Manual Control → Start.
- 5Confirm the contactor energises (audible click) and the motor starts. Verify the pump delivers water or the equipment runs as expected.
- 6If the motor hums but does not start, check the capacitor wiring — a missing or failed capacitor is the most common cause on single-phase motors.
- 7Set overload relay current dial on the contactor to the motor nameplate FLA (if not already set).
